The following new add-on for SmartMenus 6 is now available:

  • Advanced Keyboard Navigation

This add-on extends the built-in keyboard navigation support in the SmartMenus script core (using the Tab key) by adding the ability to also access the links in the menus as you could in a desktop application by using the arrow keys and the Escape key.

SmartMenus DHTML Menu / JavaScript Menu v6.0.2 Released

Mar 15 2008

It is time for another maintenance release.

Another notable fix is also included in this release - Mozilla 1.7 on Solaris refused to display any sub menus with previous SmartMenus versions. This issue is now fixed.

A New Animation Effect Add-on for SmartMenus 6 Available

Jun 21 2007

The following new animation effect add-on for SmartMenus 6 is now available:

  • Reveal Animation

The add-on is very simple to use and allows various reveal animation effects (cross-browser) to be set for opening the sub menus.

You can take a look at an example and download the new add-on in the Online Samples section of the site.

A New Add-on for SmartMenus 6 Available

Jun 15 2007

The following new add-on for SmartMenus 6 is now available:

  • Scrolling for Overlong Menus

A pretty often requested feature is now brought to SmartMenus 6 by this new add-on - overlong menus (with many items) that do not fully fit in the height of the viewport can now be scrolled so that all their items could be accessed with the mouse cursor.

The implementation is pretty unusual (and unique) as there is no other way to implement this feature in SmartMenus 6 due to the nested list structure but the important thing is that it works well and does what it is supposed to do.

You can take a look at an example and download the new add-on in the Online Samples section of the site.

You can take a look at examples and download the new add-ons in the Online Samples section of the site.

Some Additions to the Online Samples Section

Apr 05 2007

We just added some interesting style samples in the Online Samples section of the site. We have tried to demonstrate the flexibility of the script when it comes to styling the menus. Hopefully these samples will inspire many users to create great unique styles for their menus.

More samples demonstrating various features of the SmartMenus 6 JavaScript / CSS menu script are also being prepared and will soon be published.

SmartMenus DHTML Menu / JavaScript Menu v6.0 (final) Released

Jan 30 2007

Today we are happy and excited to announce that the sixth major SmartMenus version since the project was started in 2001 is finally stable and released!

It took more than a year of planning and development before the first public version was made available in June 2006. Since then, another 7 months have passed in testing, fixing and improving the code. Fortunately, this time and efforts have not been lost in vain!

We would like to express our most sincere thanks to everyone who tested the SmartMenus 6 pre-release versions, reported issues and submitted suggestions! We truly appreciate your help and contribution!

As always, you can see the complete list of changes since the last release RC1 in the changelog.

SmartMenus DHTML Menu / JavaScript Menu v6.0 RC1 Released

Nov 28 2006

We are happy to announce that the first and hopefully final Release Candidate of SmartMenus DHTML menu v6.0 is now available.

This release features some performance and accesibility improvements since beta3. The script now also works on XHTML pages served as XML, which is not that important for the moment as almost all sites are still served as "text/html", but nonetheless, this makes SmartMenus 6 future ready.

This release also includes fixes for all issues discovered in beta3. We would like to express our most sincere gratefulness to all users who reported the issues!

Please see the changelog for a complete list of changes in v6.0 RC1.

SmartMenus 5 Development End - Concentrating on SmartMenus 6

Oct 13 2006

Today we are announcing the end of the SmartMenus DHTML menu / JavaScript menu v5.x development cycle.

It has been almost 3 years since the first SmartMenus 5 release (v5.0 was released on October 20, 2003) and we think it's about time to move along and concentrate on the new SmartMenus 6 code. There are a couple of main reasons for this decision:

  • We think SmartMenus 5 has reached a phase in development where there are basically no more major improvements we could implement.
  • We believe accessibility is one of the most important areas in web development and that's why we decided to concentrate all our efforts at improving the new SmartMenus 6.

Further updates to SmartMenus 5 are not likely to be released in the future, except in very rare cases when some crucial bugs are discovered (possibly in yet unreleased browsers). However, support for all SmartMenus 5 users will always remain available.

For more information about SmartMenus 5, please visit:

As for the status of SmartMenus 6, we are currently putting the finishing touches to the code and improving the manual. So, hopefully, very soon the final v6.0 will be ready for release.

New Host, New Site, New Forum

Oct 13 2006

We are glad to announce that we have finally accomplished the move to a new host. Hopefully, the major server problems we had in the last few months will remain just bad memories.

We also updated the site from the ground up to improve its accessibility and flexibility. We plan to add more useful features to the site soon but the major update is done. We hope you will like the new design too! :)

The forums are now also up again. The worst thing, however, is that the last major server problem we had with our previous hosting provider erased the forums' database and it is now restored to a state from the end of January. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience but, unfortunately, there isn't anything we could do about it.

It's worth mentioning also that we migrated from phpBB to PunBB for the forums. Although its default configuration is not that advanced, PunBB is much simpler and faster than phpBB. It also outputs much more accessible (and standards compliant) content than phpBB, so we believe this is a good move and hope you will like the new forums.

SmartMenus DHTML Menu / JavaScript Menu v6.0 beta3 Released

Sep 12 2006

This is the third and last beta of the upcoming version 6 of the SmartMenus DHTML menu / JavaScript menu.

There are a number of improvements since beta2 and an interesting new feature - the sub menus can now be configured to pop up onclick (instead of the default onmouseover). For a full list of the changes please take a look at the "changelog.txt" file in the SmartMenus 6 beta3 download package.

We planned to release this beta about a month ago but, unfortunately, the server problems we had disrupted our plans.

SmartMenus DHTML Menu / JavaScript Menu v6.0 beta2 Released

Jul 15 2006

The second beta of the upcoming version 6 of the SmartMenus DHTML menu / JavaScript menu was released today.

Much better load performance in IE/Windows is the most notable improvement since beta1.

Also support for the filter effects in IE5.5+ is now added and they can be used with SmartMenus 6. Please note, however, that there is a very annoying bug in IE which causes serious problems when static filters are used (no sub menus can be displayed for the menus that have static filter applied). This problem does not appear with transition filters (the animation effects) so they can be used without worries.
